Julie Grant packs a powerful one-two punch as a trained, and seasoned, journalist and attorney. The former prosecutor, victims’ rights champion, and trial advocacy teacher brings a unique blend of journalism experience and legal expertise to every story she tells. Julie is a trailblazer! She made history by co-creating and hosting the first true crime and trial morning television show: Opening Statements with Julie Grant on Court TV.
Julie is an award-winning journalist. Her notable interviews include civil rights leader and literary icon Dr. Maya Angelou, famed criminal defense attorney F. Lee Bailey, world-renowned forensic pathologist Dr. Cyril Wecht and Olympic Gold Medalist Kurt Angle. Before attending law school, Julie started her career in broadcast journalism at WTOV 9 TV station in Steubenville, OH, where she worked as an anchor and reporter. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Mass Media from Mount Union College, and aspired to bring legal expertise into her reporting work. After graduating law school and practicing law, Julie returned to television to work as an anchor at WGHP-FOX8 TV Station in Greensboro, NC. From there, Julie joined the team at KDKA TV station in Pittsburgh, PA as their legal editor, reporter and anchor. In 2019, Court TV network recruited Julie to be one of the main faces of their network relaunch. Julie anchored Court TV Live for seven years and was given her own branded show, Opening Statements with Julie Grant, in the Fall of 2023. Court TV fans made it part of their daily routine to join Julie each weekday morning for what she called “coffee and court.”
In television, they call her “The Professor!" Julie is both a licensed attorney and a trial expert. She earned her Juris Doctor from the University of Akron School of Law. She was a trial team competitor and a member of the winning team at the 2007 National Civil Trial Competition. Julie also received the CALI Award for Excellence in her trial advocacy II class. Julie committed to an accelerated study program and completed her law school course work in two and a half years. She passed her bar examination before walking at her graduation ceremony. Upon graduation, Julie entered the practice of law. While serving as an Assistant District Attorney in Allegheny County, PA (Pittsburgh), Julie tried numerous felony and misdemeanor cases before both judges and juries. Julie further developed her trial expertise by earning her Master of Laws degree (LL.M.) with Honors in Trial Advocacy from Temple University’s School of Law. There, she received the Faculty Award and the Edward D. Ohlbaum Award for her commitment to the Art of Trial Advocacy. Upon graduation, Julie was asked to teach in Temple’s highly regarded LL.M. program. She has also served as a faculty member of the National Institute for Trial Advocacy. Julie is presently teaching students in the trial advocacy program at Emory University's School of Law.
Julie is highly regarded among the members of the true crime community, and beyond, for her genuine warmth and kindness. Julie always shows compassion for victims and covers true crime stories with the utmost respect and sensitivity. Driven by her heartfelt regard for victims’ advocacy, Julie serves on the board of the National Center for Victims of Crime. She also serves as an advisory board member for the nationally recognized Paws for Empowerment program at Crisis Center North in Western Pennsylvania. The program’s canine court advocates accompany domestic violence survivors to criminal court proceedings and provide therapy during private counseling sessions.
Before combining her passions of journalism and law, Julie was able to pursue her love of dance at a high level by cheerleading professionally for the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins. In her spare time, Julie enjoys reading autobiographies, cuddling her cat Rocky and her dog Bella, weight training at the gym, and interacting with her fans on social media. Important to Julie is sharing inspirational messages with others. A personal favorite that she coined: “Preparation, persistence & passion are the keys to success!”
