Kenneth Mead retired from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) in December 2023 after nearly 26 years of service. His assignments included patrol, field training officer, gang investigations, counterterrorism, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Joint Terrorism Task Force, academy instructor, and, lastly, was the program coordinator for LVMPD’s Threat Assessment Program for Terrorism and Targeted Violence. Additionally, he was the terrorism liaison to the Nevada legislative session in 2022–2023 and refined and instituted the LVMPD department policy and procedure on the use of high-risk protection orders and threat assessment, drafting legislation on both topics.
Kenneth Mead has a Bachelor of Arts degree in abnormal psychology, a Master of Science degree in criminal justice, and a post-graduate certification in forensic psychology. Kenneth is a consultant for the International Association of Chiefs of Police Mass Violence Advisory Initiative, Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, and the Institute for Intergovernmental Research. Kenneth is an active member of the Desert Southwest Chapter of the Association of Threat Assessment Professionals. He regularly presents at conferences on topics relating to threat assessment and management, the use of extreme risk protective orders, mass/targeted violence, and domestic terrorism. Prior to retirement, Kenneth Mead was one of several local police detectives certified as a threat management coordinator with the FBI Behavioral Analysis, Unit 1 (Terrorism and Targeted Violence), Las Vegas Field Office.
During the October 1 incident, Kenneth drafted the initial search warrant for the suspect’s home and then transitioned into the role as lead interrogator/interviewer of the suspect’s girlfriend in order to determine motive and a psychological profile of the suspect. Additionally, just days before retiring, he responded to and coordinated identification of the University of Nevada Las Vegas mass shooter and developed an initial threat profile for said shooter.
Kenneth is currently employed as the Regional Security Advisor for Nevada working with Secure Community Network, which is the official safety and security organization for the Jewish community in North America. In said role, Mead is responsible the safety, security, and training for 53 Jewish facilities and a Jewish Nevada population of approximately 76,000. Kenneth has numerous media appearances on TV shows/documentaries produced based on his work and cases, including appearances on Netflix, HBO Max, Oxygen Channel, and Paramount Plus.
